The Gaeta Family Tree

Family Tree Photo Album Instructions:

1. When you first click on Family Album, you will see some photos and the word "Gallery" at the top of the page. Each photo there is the cover of an entire photo album. The name of the photo album is to the right of the photo. In the upper right you will see a search box. Under that, you can click on "login" to log into the site. At the bottom of the page, you will see some numbers and arrows. Click on them to see more photo albums.
If you click on an album's cover photo, you will see the thumbnails of rest of the photos in that photo album as well as other sub albums if there are any. Double click on each thumbnail to see a larger picture. In the upper right corner of the page, you can click on "slideshow" to see a slideshow of all of the photos in that album. (See the slideshow instructions below) Double click the sub albums to see the photos in those albums.

2. To upload photos or edit them, you must log in. You will need a username and password to do this. To get it, send me an e-mail and just ask for a password. Once you log in, you can change it to whatever you want.

3. After you log in, in the upper right corner of the page under the search box you will see a "Welcome" greeting and your name. Under that, you will see [new album] [preferences] [logout]. If you click on "preferences", a box will pop up and you can change your username and password. Click "logout" to log out.

4. To make a new album, click on [new album]. Once you've made your new album, you will see a page that says [Hey! add some photos] in the middle of the page. Now you are inside of the new album. When you click on that link, a box will pop up with instructions on how to add the photos. Just click on "Browse", then go to the file where your photo is and click it to upload it. You can write a caption if you want, or you can do it later. Click on "Upload Now" at the bottom of the pop up to upload the photos. Click on "Dismiss" after the upload to close the pop up. If you're not ready to add photos, you can go back to the main Gallery page by clicking on the small up arrow in the upper right corner of the page under the word "logout". To get back in, click on the empty new album that you just made.

5. Once you have 1 or more photos in the album, you can click on the cover (highlight) photo to enter the album. Inside, you will see the thumbnail view of your photos and two types of pull down menus. The first type is located underneath each of your photos. They say "edit photo" and when you click on the pull down arrow, there are 9 possible choices. Above the pull down menu, you will see the caption or file name of the photo. You can edit this by double clicking on "edit text" in the pull down menu. Above the caption of the first photo, it will say (highlight). The term "highlight" means that the photo is the cover photo for the album it is in. You can make any photo in your album the cover photo by highlighting it. Below is a list of the other items in the pull down menu next to each photo in the album and what they do:

<edit photo> Drop down menu items. You must double click these items rapidly:

  • Edit Text - as discussed above. Be sure to double click rapidly on each item. This lets you edit the caption under the photo.

  • Edit Thumbnail- a pop up lets you show only a portion of the photo in the thumbnail view.

  • Rotate/Flip Photo - self explanatory, a pop up comes up and you can rotate the photo

  • Highlight Photo - double clicking on this will make the photo the cover photo for the album.

  • Move Photo -a pop up comes up and you can move the photo to a different position in the album, or to another album.

  • Reorder photo- Similar to move photo. A pop up lets you move the photo to a different position in the album but not to another album

  • Copy photo - a pop up comes up and this option lets you copy one or more photos from the current album into another album. Don't use this feature. We are limited to 3 gigs on the server and copies will only fill it up faster.

  • Hide Photo- clicking this will hide the photo so that no one can see it except for you when you log on. It will say "hidden" above the photo and a new link in the drop down menu will appear which says 'show photo". Clicking on that will reverse it. You may have to click a few times rapidly to get these links to work.

  • Delete photo- clicking this will remove the photo from the album and from the server. To get it back, you will have to upload it again.

 6. In the upper right corner inside the photo album you will see another pull down menu that says <admin options>. These links allow you to do things to the entire album. See the list below. Next to that it says [slideshow] and [logout]. Underneath that, it will say "Gallery: Gallery ^. Click the up arrow to go up and out of the photo album. Logout logs you out of the site. When you double click the slideshow, you can view all of the photos in the album as a slideshow.

7. Slideshow: This is pretty self explanatory. You click on "play" to start it and "stop" to stop it. You can reverse the direction, and you can provide a time for the length of time you view each photo. You can click on "loop" to make the slideshow keep going again. And you can choose which type of transition there is between photos. Click on the up arrows in the upper right corner of the page to get out of the album. You can also try clicking on the full screen applet at the top of the page to see the show on your entire monitor but you'll have to download a Java Plug In for that which may or may not be compatible with your browser.

<admin options>Drop down menu items. You must double click these items rapidly:

  • add photos- Obviously, double clicking here opens a pop up that enables you to add more photos to the album

  • custom fields - this allows you to customize all the photos in the album. You can add a title to the photo, an upload date, a capture date, the image size, and an alternate text on mouse over.

  • edit captions- allows you to edit the custom fields, or just the captions for each photo.

  • new nested album- when you double click here, a sub album is made within the current album. This becomes a new album and you can add photos to it and modify it just like any other album. You can also move it later if you want.

  • album permissions- keep clicking these to get them to open. A pop up opens and here you can give permission to other family members to use the current album. You can give them permission to see the album, change the text, add photos, modify photos, delete photos, create sub albums, view original images, add comments, and view comments. Just highlight the username and click on the arrows to move people in and out for each permission.

  • poll properties, poll reset, poll results: these are used for contests and this feature is not enabled so just ignore these.

  • album properties- this box may be hard to open. Keep clicking.. There are many features here that you can set for your album. You can specify the color, number of rows and columns for the pictures, etc.

  • rebuild thumbs- this just lets you edit the thumbs. Use the pull downs next to each picture to do so as explained above.

  • rename album- a pop up opens allowing you to re-name the album

  • resize all - a pop up opens and allows you to resize all of the photos in the album

  • sort album- a pop up opens and you can sort the photos by by upload date, by picture taken date, by filename, number of clicks, caption, comments or randomly.

8. When you are in a sub album, you can get back to the outer album by clicking on the small arrow next to the name of the sub album in the upper right corner of the page underneath where it says "logout". Click the small arrow next to "Gallery" to go to the main gallery where all of the albums are. Now you are back to the first page where it says "Gallery" in the upper left top of the page. Here is where you will see which albums you have permission to access. You will see the following links under the names of each of these albums: [delete album] [move album] [reorder album] [rename album] [edit captions] [permissions] [properties] . These are explained next:

  • [delete album] This is self explanatory. Double (or triple!) click it to remove the entire album. All photos in it will be deleted.

  •  [move album] This allows you to move one album into or out of another.

  •  [reorder album] This allows you to change the order in which the album is listed in the main Gallery section.

  •  [rename album] Use this to change the name of the album

  •  [edit captions] Use this to edit the captions for the album

  •  [permissions] Same as above. Use this to give permission to others to add photos to the album, delete them, etc.

  •  [properties] Same as above. Use this to change the album color, number of rows and columns, etc.

Since there are so many family members here, make only one main album and use your name as the title and put the word "Album" at the end so it's clear that this is an album. Then you can make sub albums inside the main one. Also, all photos should be in JPEG format and if possible, resized to lower quality so the file is not too large. You only need the full size if you are going to print the photo. That way, we can fit more photos on the site. Use Kodak for full size photos that you want others to be able to print out. If we run out of room on the server, I may have to limit the number of photos at a later date.

That's about it. It's really not that hard once you take the time to get used to it. If you need more help, leave a message on the message board and one of us will help you with it. Or you can e-mail me at: johnfgaeta@aol.com
